So this update is about a week overdue, but I have been absolutely swamped between school and climbing! I’m learning how to balance everything though; it might just take a little bit of time :)
Anyway, last weekend I competed at the 1st Annual ACG Invitational in Lake Forest, CA. The comp took place at a beautiful new gym, Aesthetic Climbing Gym, where they had some crazy tall walls (18 feet I think?)!
The best part of the comp was that it was so laid back, but drew so many high level competitors at the same time. For women I was competing against the likes of Alex Johnson, Nina Williams, Natasha Barnes, Courtney Sanders, and so many other strong ladies. The men were equally as stacked with Daniel Woods, Michael Bautista, Kyle Owen, Matt Wilder, Jon Cardwell, Garrett Gregor, etc.
So the comp ran in a two-round onsight, with semi-finals in the morning and finals in the evening. Semi-finals consisted of 5 problems, while finals had 3 problems.
In semi-finals I flashed 3 of the 5 problems, putting me in 3rd place behind Alex Johnson and Nina Williams going into finals. I really enjoyed the semi-finals problems, they were well set and a lot of fun to climb.
In finals, the problems became even crazier! The first problem was a slab with a no-hands start; I sent it my fourth attempt after falling off of the start a few times. The second problem went from a roof to a vertical wall, I fell gunning for the last hold, Courtney Sanders was the only one to complete it. Finally, the third problem was absolutely ridiculous! All of the crimps were micro and I fell at the same spot as many other ladies. Alex Johnson sent this problem, which was absolutely insane! I was convinced that it would go unsent throughout the competition.
I ended up placing 4th behind Alex Johnson, Courtney Sanders, and Nina Williams. I had an amazing time at the competition, the gym was beautiful, the competition ran well, and all of my fellow competitors were so strong!
My next competition is the SBC Pro in Seattle on September 21-22.
