This past week has been a blast to say the least. Once again, Salt Lake proved to be the most fun event of the year!
So let’s begin with day one!
On Sunday I flew into Salt Lake with my dad, checked into the hotel, and stayed low key for the rest of the night. The one exciting thing I did though, was go out to dinner with the Bautistas! They are definitely my favorite climbing brothers and every time I see them I feel like I have a new story to tell.
The next day was qualifiers. I climbed at 4 so this gave me a little bit of time to play around before. In the morning my dad and I went to the set up of the show, picked up our badges, and said hi to my sponsors. After this, we went back to the hotel where I took my pre-comp nap and geared up for qualifiers! I had 5 routes in qualifiers, and sent 3 of them. I placed 3rd behind Alex Puccio and Alex Johnson, something that I am extremely proud of! I have never placed this high in qualifiers. After competing, the rest of the night was very relaxing. I went to bed early so I could wake up for my semi-final round in the morning.
The top 20 from qualifiers made it to semi-finals, so it was a little bit less crowded in The Front the next morning. I left on the last limo, and could not have been more psyched. Unlike qualifiers, where I had five problems, I only three in semi-finals. I flashed my first problem, was a few holds from the top on my second problem, and didn’t make it very far on the third problem. Although I didn’t make finals (they took top 6, I was 9th), I am super psyched with how I did. I’m pretty sure I have finally recovered from being sore!
After semi-finals, I headed to the trade show to do a poster signing for Sanuk. Then that night, I was able to see finals from a spectators point of view. The final problems looked sick, my hands were sweating from just watching people climb them.
After taking the night in early, I was able to do some climbing at the Front with Chris Sharma, who still seems like a major celebrity to me! We did some filming for Sanuk, then after this I headed back to the show, and then sadly to the airport for my flight home!
Overall, my trip was great, and I am looking forward to the show next year! It is always a blast to see my wonderful sponsors and hangout with all of my friends from across the country.
